STS-41-D was the 12th mission of NASA's Space Shuttle program and was launched on August 30, 1984. The primary objective of the mission was to deploy three communication satellites, including the Syncom IV-2 satellite which was the heaviest satellite launched at that time. The crew consisted of seven members, including the first sitting member of the United States Congress to fly in space, Senator Jake Garn. The mission lasted for a total of 6 days, 56 minutes and 4 seconds, during which the crew conducted various experiments and tests. Despite encountering some technical issues, the mission was considered a success and played a significant role in advancing the capabilities of communication satellites.
